WeFeedUs, LLC announces PA based commercial Aquaponics facility.
Carlisle, Pennsylvania – January 7, 2013 – WeFeedUs, LLC
WeFeedUs, LLC announced it has constructed a PA based commercial Aquaponics facility. WeFeedUs is a sustainable resource management company developing a commercial scale sustainable operation integrating the production of produce, fish, algae and renewable energy. The production of food will be driven by, but not limited to, on-site managed Aquaponics systems, Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS), algae biomass production and green energy systems powering the facilities. The company provides a scalable commercial model for future sustainable food and energy ecosystems. The WeFeedUs complete eco-process model connects the growth of sustainable food sources, the community, the environment and energy solutions for a greener, healthier planet.
The proprietary eco-process maximizes the utilization of nutrients, waste and other important natural components to promote the robust growth of sustainable Produce, Aquaculture, Algae, and other co-products. We are focused on hiring the best and brightest subject matter experts to assist us in maintaining our leading edge technology and market edge with continued process improvement in research, development and production.
“Our commitment to the global community is to reduce food miles, food waste and the carbon footprint, while increasing bio and food security, and the overall health of the world’s population. We must act responsibly now to maintain a healthy and available planet for our next generations,” said Mike Andrus, Co-Founder and Principal. The world is seeing more Locavores (people who are interested in eating food that is locally grown and not moved long distances to market) everyday brought on by sustainability.
The average American foodstuff now travels 1,500 miles before being consumed. That is only the average. The typical US meal contains five ingredients grown in other countries. Dinner in LA could easily include beef from Chile (5,585 miles), rice from Thailand (8,263), olives from Italy (6,353), mushrooms from New Zealand (6,508), and a nice shiraz from Australia (7,487). As 70 percent of a foodstuff’s final retail price comes from transportation, storage and handling, these miles add up quickly. Quote from the book “Abundance”, by Diamandis and Kotler WeFeedUs selected the regional logistics hub of Carlisle, PA as a strategic location due to available biomass resources from local dairy and agricultural facilities, strong academic and governmental support and available sources of carbon dioxide. The initial production facility co-located at the company’s headquarters occupies 3.5 acres of existing greenhouse structures, offices and agricultural storage, atop the second largest underground lake in Pennsylvania. The company’s distribution center is strategically located within 200 miles of Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, DC and New York City. The company is finalizing offtake agreements with several US Colleges that have world class sustainability programs. WeFeedUs will provide fresh organic produce for their student dining services and catering. We will also provide a comprehensive intern program for their students. The intern program will include all aspects of our business model including aquaponics, research & development, publications, packaging and distribution. “We want to provide the students with practical experience and share our entrepreneurial spirit with young minds who will one day take responsibility for our planet,” said Andrus.
WeFeedUs has partnered with a distribution company that holds significant national and worldwide contracts for the acquisition and delivery of fresh fish and produce. This organization is keen on partnering with WeFeedUs to provide fresh, sustainable/organic produce to LOCAL small and midsize grocery chains their network. The company will also provide locally grown produce to restaurants and other regional food retail organizations that are committed to sustainability.
WeFeedUs provides their customers with the exact quantity they request; thereby reducing or eliminating shrink. They provide local delivery; increasing freshness, decreasing food miles and FOB and shipping overhead. They also provide price protection and flexibility with their customer count. They will allow their customers to private label products to help them increase their own brand recognition. They can grow produce to their customers’ specifications.
WeFeedUs will also maintain a sustainable training center and utilize our SSI ™ (Sustainable Staffing Initiative). Providing contract and permanent resources to assist other like-minded organizations to achieve their sustainability objectives. Including hiring America’s heroes, the men and women from our armed forces.
Full commercial scale production capacity is expected by the third quarter of 2013. WeFeedUs will scale this model throughout the United States and abroad. The company’s technologies and services will also assist the US Department of Defense efforts to implement Net-Zero initiatives on CONUS military bases and reduce supply-line dependencies and vulnerabilities for forward deployed forces.
